Poem of the Day

Eurovision

Time for Eurovision, it’s nearly spring
Another year’s jamboree in Turin
Chintzy songs to show Europe’s unity
Celebrate lifestyle and diversity
Viva la Diva, Viva Victoria, Aphrodite,
Viva la Diva, Viva Victoria, Cleopatra.

UK wears a crown of thorns for nil pts,
Loss of popularity for Brexit hurts
Global Britain alone among old allies
Scotland stranded by Boris and his lies
If you say you love me madly, I’ll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string

Seventy years of secure peace shatter
Artillery rumbles, explosions clatter
The siren calls, find shelter and cover
Children shocked and terrorised cower
Boom bang-a-bang, boom bang-a-bang loud in my ear
Boom bang-a-bang, boom bang-a-bang pounding away

The Iron Curtain melted, commies no more
But the bear rises, only offers gore
Putin astride, bare-chested, angry, and vain
Serves Ukrainian imperialist pain
Turn the unthinkable to reality
You see, I can do it all and more

The West too eager on money and gain
In London, Oligarchs allowed free rein
Two-minute warning now sounds aloud
The prospect of World War Three has us cowed
But soon you will find that there comes a time
For making your mind up

A veil now shadows this dark continent
Scared nations and people not confident
Time for us to build and work together
Stiffen for bravery, not white feather
Dance forever, come and be mine
Dance together, till the end of time

History repeats, fascists return,
Tyrants and despots leave countries to burn
Same old European wars through time
Lessons never learned and the clocks still chime
Waterloo, couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo, knowing my fate is to be with you

Castaway thugs and anti-democrats
Mock, sneer, and shout at the tin pots and rats
Banish the billionaires, their acolytes
Condemn the demigods, give people rights
Not quite an angel or the one that fell
Now choose to join us or go straight to hell

Solidarity, the path to world peace
Hostilities and fighting must cease
Embrace and respect different cultures
The message of hope for all our futures
Save all your kisses for me
Bye, bye, baby, bye, bye

No more little England, unite with friends
Sing for just fun, not nationalist ends
Party for Europe and sing out in May
Let your leaders know what you have to say
There will be no sorrow when you sing tomorrow
And you walk along with your ding-dang-dong

I wrote this poem for the Eurovision song contest a few years ago. It was just an attempt to contrast the camp fun of the annual jamboree and the war threatening Europe again. Despite the dark nature of the subject, I had fun browsing YouTube for past winners. It was like a commentary in my life. Eurovision is back on again in a couple of weeks, and I’ll be watching as always, scoring my favourites and laughing at the songs that will likely get nil points!
